Camp: Notes on Fashion
The MET 1000 5th Ave, New York, NY 10028, USA, New York City, USA

The Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute’s spring 2019 exhibition, Camp: Notes on Fashion, is inspired by Susan Sontag's seminal essay on camp. Her essay was the first major analysis of the phenomenon of camp - certainly the first to take it seriously.
We can see historical examples of camp in the Regency dandy, Oscar Wilde and Mae West, to name a few. In our own time, camp has triumphed as the dominant mode of cultural icons like Madonna, Lady Ga Ga and RuPaul. Camp is not just limp wrists and lavender, it can be a radical, disruptive force.
250 objects from the 17th-century onwards will be on display. The exhibition has been set up by Gucci and Conde Nast.
