Fantasy Fest Key West 2026
16 October 2026 - 25 October 2026
Key West, Florida, United States, Key West, USA

Fantasy Fest is the week when Key West gets even less inhibited than usual. For ten days each October, elaborate costumes and body paint take over Old Town, with parades, parties and crowds gathering around Duval Street well into the night.
What is Fantasy Fest?
The festival began in 1979, originally conceived to bring visitors to Key West during a traditionally quiet part of the year. More than four decades later, it has become one of the island's defining annual events.
Fantasy Fest isn't officially a gay festival, but it takes place in one of America's great LGBTQ+ vacation towns and has an obvious appeal for gay travelers. Key West has a longstanding gay scene, gay resorts and a famously permissive social atmosphere. Add a festival built around dressing however you please and being considerably less inhibited than usual, and the crossover feels pretty natural.

What is Fantasy Fest actually like?
Costumes are taken seriously here. Expect everything from simple outfits to elaborate transformations involving wigs, body paint and creations that have clearly taken months rather than minutes to plan.
The atmosphere is highly social too. Simply walking around Old Town becomes part of the experience, particularly once the evening gets going and the streets fill with people in costume.
The 2026 theme is "Musical Icons and Iconic Musicals," which should provide plenty of material. Subtlety is unlikely to feature heavily.
Fantasy Fest 2026 highlights
The Fantasy Fest Parade is the biggest spectacle of the festival, bringing huge crowds into the streets of Key West.
There's also the Masquerade March, Street Fair and a much larger calendar of themed parties, performances and events taking place around town. Some are free to attend, while private parties and special events may require tickets.

Is Fantasy Fest gay?
Not officially, but Fantasy Fest and gay Key West are very comfortable bedfellows.
Key West has been an LGBTQ+ vacation destination for decades, with gay bars, LGBTQ+ nightlife and several gay resorts. During Fantasy Fest, that existing scene becomes part of a much larger island-wide celebration.
The festival's emphasis on self-expression also feels particularly compatible with Key West's gay culture. Visitors come to dress up, experiment with their appearance and enjoy a few days where standing out is considerably more useful than blending in.
How wild does Fantasy Fest get?
Pretty wild.
Much of Fantasy Fest is adult-oriented, particularly the nightlife and later street celebrations. Expect revealing costumes, body paint and an atmosphere considerably less restrained than the average Florida street festival.
There are community events suitable for wider audiences, so it's worth checking individual listings rather than assuming every part of Fantasy Fest is the same.
You also don't have to participate in the wilder side. People-watching is practically an event in its own right.
Where should gay travelers stay?
If you're coming specifically for Fantasy Fest, staying in Key West itself makes life considerably easier. Old Town puts you close to the main festival action as well as much of the island's gay nightlife.
Accommodation becomes expensive and availability tightens as Fantasy Fest approaches, so this is not a trip we'd leave until the last minute. Staying farther up the Keys can save money, but you'll then have to deal with the journey back after the party.
